Seattle City Council member Richard McIver was fined $1,000 by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission on July 16, 2008 for violating the city’s ethics code. McIver awarded a consultant contract to a firm whose owner he was close friends with and at whose condominium he enjoyed vacations. This case is a good reminder that elected officials and those in government responsible for contracting and procurement must be very careful in making decisions in order to avoid both real conflicts of interest as well as the appearance of impropriety.
